Creating and Sustaining Positive Energy at Work (Part 1)
“Energy cannot be created nor destroyed” we were taught in our science courses as the first law of thermodynamics. But when it comes to the dynamics of work and productivity, energy can be created and destroyed – and can be transferred.
I recently pointed this out to someone who asked about how to create and sustain positive energy in order to stimulate and maintain top performance. “There are usually three important ways to create and amplify positive energy,” I told him. And I want to share with you those crucial ways of bringing freshness and vitality to your work.
First, be intentional about your THOUGHTS.
Your most prominent thoughts will determine your feelings and energy level. If you focus on positives, your energy increases. But if you keep your mind on negatives, your energy drops rapidly.
My mathematics teacher in secondary school, Mr. Kola Deji, played that game with me. During a Mathematics Competition, I was to face a prominent school in my area. My friends had told me about the brilliance of its students and how they could easily beat me in any competition. When I confessed my fears to Mr. Kola, he simply told me that I was the best student he ever taught. He said emphatically that I was better than high-flying students I admired who had graduated. As I internalized that thought, there was a surge of energy within me. I just went into the hall, knocked that school out within the shortest time possible and returned to thank Mr Kola. Q.E.D.
Till date, anytime I have a significant thing to do, I just fix my mind on such a positive event, remembering every detail. That same energy comes into me again and again! Sure you must have experienced something similar too. On the other hand, when you fix your mind on your weaknesses and failures, you will hardly be able to lift a finger to accomplish anything significant.
So, to create positive energy, simply focus your thoughts on positives!
Second, be intentional about your ENVIRONMENT, especially the company you keep.
Your environment can condition your energy level. Whenever you are in an environment that limits your expression (not just freedom of speech, but about the freedom to utilize your potentials), your energy drops. That is why students in Nigerian public schools seem to perform worse than those in private schools. Also, those abroad perform much better than those in local schools.
Furthermore, our thoughts are greatly influenced by the people in our circle, so also our feelings and moods. To observe how this works, stay among members of the winning team when a football match is ongoing. Of course, you don’t need any explanation to know that you will be cured of depression by just being there!
The fact is when you are around someone who is always happy, you also will be happy. When you are around someone who is always sad, you will be sad too. When you are around people who talk down on you, your energy level drops, but when you are around people who make you feel great, they call forth the potentials in you! So, to gain positive energy, stay in a positive environment.
Watch out for the third point next week.
To your greatness,
